OpenURC Archive — Universal Remote Console Standards

The Open URC Alliance promoted ISO/IEC 24752, the international standard for Universal Remote Consoles — technology enabling personalized, accessible user interfaces for any device, by any user.

What Was the Universal Remote Console

The Universal Remote Console (URC) is a software framework in which controllers present adapted user interfaces for targets — any networked device or service. Rather than forcing every user to navigate a single manufacturer-designed interface, URC lets individuals interact with technology through personalized UIs matched to their abilities, language, and preferences.

URC addresses critical challenges in human-computer interaction: localization across languages and cultures, general usability for non-technical users, and — most importantly — accessibility for persons with disabilities. The framework is rooted in the concept of a user interface socket, an abstract description of a device's functionality that any compliant controller can render.

The standard originated as ANSI/INCITS 389-2005 through 393-2005, developed through pioneering research at the Trace Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. It was subsequently adopted internationally as ISO/IEC 24752, an 8-part standard published between 2008 and 2018. The Universal Control Hub (UCH) serves as the middleware layer, connecting controllers to targets through socket descriptions stored on resource servers.
